Decolonising Yoga: A Journey of Reconnection

Reclaiming Yoga

Over the past decades, we have been on a journey—one of curiosity, learning, and deep reflection. As yoga has become more global, much of what is taught and practiced today has been shaped by Western-dominant narratives, often focusing on physical postures while leaving behind the deeper history, philosophy, and purpose of yoga.

But yoga has always been more than movement—it is a way of being, a tool for living a meaningful and purposeful life, and a path to finding home within ourselves.

Yoga’s Fluidity

As we continue to explore yoga’s origins and evolution, we recognise how much there is to learn from its rich history. Yoga has always been fluid, adapting to different times and cultures. Yet, at its heart, it remains a practice of liberation and connection.

Part of this learning means paying attention to whose voices are represented in yoga spaces and making room for those who have historically been excluded.

Why Representation Matters in Yoga

Representation matters—not as a checkbox, but as a reflection of yoga’s true essence. By centring teachers and practitioners from Black and Brown communities, the Global Majority, LGBTQ+ communities, and others who have often been on the margins, we enrich our collective understanding of what yoga can be.

Honouring these perspectives helps us return to yoga’s roots, while allowing it to evolve in a way that remains inclusive, accessible, and meaningful.

Decolonising Yoga: A Call to Curiosity, Not Rejection

Decolonising yoga is not about rejecting modern practice—it’s about being curious about where yoga comes from and how we engage with it today. It’s about:

  • Deepening our awareness

  • Making space for different voices

  • Honouring yoga’s full spectrum—from movement to philosophy, from personal healing to collective well-being

An Ongoing Journey

This is an ongoing journey, and there is always more to learn. We invite you to explore alongside us, to reflect, question, and grow together.

Yoga is for all of us—let’s honour it with curiosity, care, and integrity.
