Community as a Superpower: Bahia Yoga's Support for Nottingham Refugee Week 2025
At Bahia Yoga, we believe that community is essential to healing. Yoga connects us to ourselves and to others. That’s why we’re proud to support Nottingham Refugee Week 2025, taking place from 16th – 22nd June.
Understanding Asylum and the Legal Right to Seek Protection
It’s important to clear up some common misunderstandings about seeking asylum. There is no such thing as an "illegal" or "bogus" person seeking asylum. Under international law, everyone has the right to apply for asylum in any country that has signed the 1951 Refugee Convention. This includes the UK, where asylum seekers are allowed to stay in the country while their claim is being considered.
The 1951 Refugee Convention also acknowledges that people fleeing danger may need to use irregular means to escape. There is no legal way to travel to the UK just to seek asylum, so people may be forced to take risky routes to safety. The Refugee Convention guarantees everyone the right to apply for asylum, and no country has ever withdrawn from it. It continues to play a key role in protecting those who need it most.
Refugees and Asylum Seekers Contribute to Society
Refugees and those seeking asylum make important contributions to the UK. For example, 1,200 medically trained refugees work in the UK’s healthcare system. Many refugees also make valuable contributions to schools, communities, and local businesses, supporting their families and helping those around them.
By recognising these contributions, we can begin to see the bigger picture—refugees and asylum seekers are not a burden; they are active participants in the growth of society.
The Importance of "Community as a Superpower"
The theme for Nottingham Refugee Week 2025, "Community as a Superpower," speaks to the power of coming together. When we unite to support those seeking safety, we strengthen our communities and create welcoming environments for everyone. At Bahia Yoga, we are committed to building such spaces—places where everyone can connect, heal, and feel at home.
Join Us for Refugee Week 2025
During Refugee Week 2025, we invite you to join us in reflecting on the role of community and supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham. Whether you’re attending events, learning more about the asylum process, or sharing your experiences, every small action makes a difference.
Together, we can create communities that offer support, welcome, and a sense of belonging. Let’s take this opportunity to ensure that everyone, regardless of where they come from, has a place to call home.
Get Involved in Refugee Week
Refugee Week is an opportunity for everyone to get involved and raise awareness. You can support local events, learn more about the experiences of refugees, and share what you’ve learned with others.
