What does Yoga mean?
Each new Yoga terms begins with new Yoga students. The beginner’s mind as we know is fresh and curious, and each person will often ask what does Yoga mean? Yoga comes from the ancient Sanskrit language – it means “union”, to unite, or integration, and also refers to discipline.
What, or why, do we want unite via Yoga?
Mainly to re-experience the connection between the body and mind – often people experience a disconnection between the mental mind and physical body (feeling out of sorts, or not really here). Through Yoga we begin to reconnect with the emotions and body, which helps us to feel present and live life fully.
Yoga means union?
Even though many people think Yoga refers solely to union between the body and mind (or body, mind and spirit) the traditional recognition is union between one’s individual consciousness and the universal consciousness. Yoga therefore refers to a certain state of consciousness and the methods, which help one, reach that goal or state of union.
Yoga is a powerful means of psychological integration.
Helping us to become aware that ultimately we are part of the bigger picture. Once the mind and body are united, this union with others naturally comes about. Yoga reminds us on a simpler level, that we are not alone and are connected with all that is around us. Just remember how you feel after your Yoga class, refreshed, alive, awake, aware, peaceful, rejuvenated, centred and perhaps grounded?
This experience reminds us to return to our natural true self, which is always at ease. On a deeper level we know this. Just day to day, life gets busy and we lose a sense of balance, or perspective. Yoga helps to realign this connection and reminds us continuously all is well. Regular Yoga practice helps us to remain centred and integrated with life. Namaste
