Chair Yoga CPD – Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July, 2019 

A unique training to helps teachers find new ways of teaching Yoga. Chair Yoga helps introduce Yoga to different groups of people. From office workers to older people, most people can take part in Chair Yoga. Opening possibilities to anyone unable to take part in a mat based class.  

Our Chair Yoga course will teach you how to use the Chair as a learning tool. This course shows you how to modify postures. From standing to seated, including variations on sun salutations. You will learn that students can achieve a greater sense of self awareness, and calmness through using a Chair. This weekend involved taking part in a Chair Yoga practices. And  learning new sequences and movements, from both traditional and contemporary styles of Yoga.

Topics covered:

  • Applied anatomy and alignment guidelines for ‘Chair-based Yoga’
  • New approaches to sitting and standing positions with chairs
  • Floor based work and restorative sequences (with and without chairs)
  • Teaching approaches for office yoga and to older people

Lower Body – Day 1

Here we will explore simple yet effective sequences for mobilising the joints and muscles. From the feet, legs, thighs and hips. Understanding the limitations in the range of motion, for different population groups. Including the applications of functional anatomy to help understand what restricts and what aids movement.

Upper Body – Day 2 

The second day explores movement and anatomical principles for the torso, spine, shoulders, arms and neck. It includes a simple lesson plan, and sequences on how to adapt movement for different groups. Focussing on techniques to help release tensions around the upper part of the body. 

Both days include an introduction to simpler quieter practices, such as meditation, relaxation, mantra and mudras. The tutors will also share their experiences of teaching Chair Yoga to the public. Later in the course we will run a follow-up course in Winter 2019. 

The tutors

Jasmin is the course leader for the 200 hour teacher training programme at Bahia Yoga. And first began teaching Chair Yoga for refugees nine years ago. Bahia Yoga currently provides Chair Yoga classes to residents at Nottingham City Homes. Chris is the Anatomy and Physiology Tutor on the 200 hour course, and teaches Chair Yoga at Maggie’s Hospice in Nottingham.
